STATEMENT OF BELIEFS:
"Whoever you are, and wherever you are on your life's journey, you are welcome here!"
Historic Salem United Church of Christ is Columbia's oldest church, known to some as "Mother Church."
Over 200 years ago a Samuel Wright donated land in which Salem's original cornerstone was laid in 1805. The congregation itself dates back to 1803, when members gathered in each others homes to worship. During this time the church was German speaking, compromised of both German Reformed and Lutheran members.
Later, Salem became part of the Evangelical Synod of North America. Services in German continued until 1939, followed the next year by the church becoming known as Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church of Columbia.
